period of conflict followed the decline of the Huari and Tiwanaku empires. The common threads of religious and artistic expression that characterized the Middle Horizon came unravelled. The Late Intermediate Period was marked by the emergence of small and medium-sized kingdoms, such as the Chimu, along the coastal areas. The art of these cultures drew from previous Moche and Huari traditions.
